Sunrise over the canal - yes I was up one morning that
early! Port Sud is at the South end of Toulouse, about 12 km from the Center, and offers water and electricity. We will continue through Toulouse to the end of the Canal du Midi and continue our cruise towards Agen, Bordeaux on the Canal lateral a la Garonne. |

These are pictures for the `look what is swimming in the
canal' contest. The boat seems to have a one-cylinder engine (or maybe two) - and goes tscha-tung-tscha-tung......

Swimmers - at least they keep their head above water! |

An old tug-boat, beautifully painted, looks like it could be displayed in a museum. |

What is this? Rain - August 7, 2003 18:54 - it rains for
about 10 minutes! First rain since 10 weeks. Definitely not enough, but a start. The problem is not just that we have low water to cruise, this is only a small inconvenience compared to the big problems caused by the extreme heat and lack of rain. Forest fires destroy whole old forests, the lack of rain has destroyed a big part of the corn and sun-flower crop in the region. The vineyards from Midi to Bordeaux however talk about a very good year with an early harvest. The winemakers are afraid of late thunderstorms with hail that could destroy everything however. The warm water in the canal causes a lack of oxygen and so fish and especially eel die in large numbers. Last week we unfortunately started noticing a number of dead ducks floating on the canal, their death is possibly caused by a bacteria that thrives in hot weather. As soon as one leaves the banks of the canal the grass is yellow, the bushes and trees look like they normally look in September, yellow, dry and dead! At the start of the cruising season we hoped for nice weather, but now nice would mean a few days of rain! But back to the cruising log ..... |

Another sunny and hot (39C/102F) day in Toulouse. The cafes line the place in front of the Capitol |

View from the Capitol towards the Basilica of Saint-Sernin. On the left a small restaurant serves a crepes lunch - one salted crepes as main course and a sweet as dessert, we can just recommend it! Unfortunately I don't remember the name, but we can show you! |

Toulouse is also called "La Ville Rose" - the pink city - because of the pink stones used to construct most of the old town. The stones are supposed to be the pinkest in the South. |
