Tuesday July 1, from Beziers to Poilhes

Previous Entry

Concentration of the head rope person in the second lock of Beziers.

The lock is about 6 meters deep, one of the deepest on the Canal du Midi.

Concentration also on the wheel - notice the tan lines on the legs ;-)
The Canal du Midi crosses the Orb river in Beziers. Doing this saved two locks and kept the canal level.
View from the bridge onto the river below.
David in the passenger seat.
The cathedral of Beziers as seen from the Orb canal bridge.
It gets serious. We enter the lowest lock of the Fonseranes.

7 locks arranged in a staircase. Thanks to David we have pictures while the rest of the crew is working the ropes!

There are 6 lock basins with a total raise of 13m 60cm (about 45 feet), it takes about 45 minutes to ascent.

The view from the steering wheel.
Betty is working the bow lines as water rushes from the chamber above.
We made it. The look back down.
Another interesting structure - the tunnel of Malpas. The story has it that it was dug by hand in only 6 days.
A look from the bow back to the entrance of the tunnel.
Poilhes, the stop for the night. We are protected by two rusty cannons.
