May 20, from Aigues Mortes to Palavas

Previous Entry

Another day of cruising through the Camargue.

An amazing display of nature.

Horses,

birds, ...

And of course - pink flamingos.
The canal passes between the salt-water estuaries on one side and is separated from the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea by narrow sand dunes on the other side.
As a contrast the man-made guard doors separating the river Vidourle from the Canal du Rhone a Sete.

In case of high water the doors close to avoid flooding of the canal. In strong current a tricky passage - naturally one should stay in the canal and not get carried by accident into the river.

Time to tie down for the night. As there are no bollards in sight we use our mooring pins (well pin might be an understatement for something that is about 1 meter long and weighs a good 10 kgs).

I guess by fall Arnold needs to move aside!

Palavas is a small coastal town, with a Casino that could have been built by the creators of the Flintstones. We were just waiting for a few aliens to land...

The Lez river crosses the Canal at Palavas and allows access to the sea.
