Basel - Rhinau - down the Rhine

July 16

After a night in the port of Basel we set off to cruise again.
The first leg leads us down the Rhine to Rhinau, where we will enter the North branch Canal du Rhône au Rhin.

We lave the port of Basel to start our cruise down-stream.

As Thomas has port emergency duty he can't get away so Fredy, a colleague of Thomas, takes (gladly) over and does not part with the wheel for the next eight hours!

We enter our first lock of the day, the lock of Kembs

We are glad that they have swimming-bollards so nobody needs to climb the ladder.

We share the space with another (big) ship and there is still plenty of space.

The engine likes to be run at nearly full throttle so we head downstream with about 15 km/H. Our Alsace flag is showing the way.

After passing the lock of Vogelgrün we leave Breisach on our starboard side behind.

The MTS Neuenburgersee has waited for us in Breisach, but now (with a few more horse-power) pass us.

Here is the secret why they waited! Bea and Wolfgang from the Neuenburgsersee were so kind to load our small Peugeot onto their vessel. They lead the way to Rhinau

where they unload our car at the Rhinau lock.
A special kind of port-to-port service!

See the small white thing hanging in mid-air? It is our car being unloaded.
We enter the lock behind them and pass our 6th and last big lock of the day on the Grand Canal d'Alsace.

Wolfgang und Bea from Neuenburgersee, Fredy our Rhine-Capitain and his wife Thea , Jacqueline, Ueli, Philipp and Sebastian (Ueli is another of Betty's brothers), Fabien Lienin  (son of the carpenter in Weil), Betty and I have dinner on the Avanti B deck to conclude our passage down the Rhine.

Now the slow, peaceful and narrow world of the canals starts again.
