Doubs and Canal Rhône au Rhin - Besançon to Montbeliard

April 29 - May 2

The waterway continues alternating between canal and river Doubs for two more days. After L'Isle sur Doubs the canal leaves the Doubs and raises towards the summit.
In this area we are just a few kilometers away from the Swiss border - about as close as AvantiB will ever get to our home country (except Basel of course).
The time of the year is just perfect to pass this waterway. The scenery is superb - shades of green and trees blooming and traffic is low - rental boats will dominate the scene in just a couple of months.
While many books have been written about the Canal du Midi, out 2003 cruise, I think this waterway definitely matches the beauty of it.

Lets go, hurry up, go go go ... A 'Reiherente' with the new family.

Our stop for the night is a public quay of Deluz. Opposite our mooring place is an old papermill. It was closed in 1977 and once employed more than 500 workers.

The church of Deluze with the bell tower typical for the region.

Racine visits Gisela - it seems that he always finds the best places to rest.

Thomas continues his work on the name-plate. Notice - he even put on his reading glasses!

An old mill on the river.

The old factory at Lassey used the water of the Doubs to drive the machines.

A view back towards the cliffs of the Jura mountains.

Shades of green line the canal. Will it continue behind the bend?

Well - what do you think this is?
AvantiB and its crew waiting for the VNF as yet another lock is broken. Usually the VNF (Voies Navigable the France) employee just comes and has to press a button to reset a circuit breaker.

One employee tells us that they try to tell their superiors that the system doesn't work and has many technical problems, but he says 'nobody listens'. So he asks us to send a letter as the management might listen to the users.

We wonder what happens in summer when traffic is heavy! Will the VNF just assign a person to each lock (so not saving anything over the previous system where each lock had a lock-keeper?).

Friday April 30, 7pm. Our mooring for the night - not close to anything! Thomas shows his cowboy skills and lassoes the bollard from far away.
But why are we here? No - not because of bad planning, but because we lost more time following our favorite past-time..... waiting for the VNF!

Early morning of May 1 on the Doubs.
Did you read the previous sentence? MAY 1 in France! Everything is closed! Except the automatic locks. The note says 'the locks work, but if something breaks nobody will come and fix it'.
Since we just want to reach L'Isle sur Doubs we hope that we are lucky and that none of the three locks leading to L'Isle sur Doubs will be broken!

We made it! But what is this? Shopping on May 1!
Just opposite our mooring in L'Isle sur Doubs is a Super U Gas station. So we rent a shopping cart and after three trips with our 100 liter containers our tank is full again.

We also take the opportunity to change the oil, filters as we are just over 100 hours since we left Beaucaire.

May 2, early morning in L'Isle sur Doubs. This is where the canal leaves the Doubs for good.

Spring time in Middle Europe.

When we left Beaucaire the spring bloom was nearly over and here trees are still in full bloom. Even some of Betty's plants on the deck get confused and one plant starts blooming for a second time this year.

Low bridge ahead. The bridge is only 3.48m high - our wheelhouse is 3.38m so we (should) make it.

Keep left - it seems higher.
We make it, the measurement was correct. It turns out that our flag-pole is just about 3.47m high so barley scrapes by.

The canal passes through the village of Voujeancourt.

No more automatic locks! The engine here is Peter turning the handle to open the doors.

Our last encounter with the Doubs. Just a quick passage through the river. The source of the Doubs is in the Jura mountains of France, briefly passes through the North-West corner of Switzerland and then heads back into France. Only then is it deep enough to be a navigable river.
