The Saône from Lyon to Saint Symphorien

April 24 - April 26

In contrast to the Rhône is the Saône characterized as a gentle and charming river. It flows through some of Europe's most famous wine regions; the Beaujolais and the Burgundy regions.
Not that it matters much, with our schedule all visits are postponed until fall when we head downstream.

Ecluse de Couzon - our first lock on the Saône

No, I don't know who own this nice castle, but the tower is reserved as my computer room

The lock-master insists on lifevests while Betty gets a lesson in rope-switching

Our stop for the night Trevoux

A male swan defending the territory of the family with the female sitting in the nest in the brushes.

Early Sunday morning on the Saône with the hills of the Beaujolais in the background

Castle anybody?

A house with a view and a vineyard

Mark Twain and Huckleberry Finn on the Saône. Amazing the things that float....

Cows; not just in Switzerland.

Thomas insisted on Betty making this picture. A hull of a barge provides a wall for the sand quay.

The Mistral catches up with us

Macon (Beaujolais) - will we make it under the bridge????

Attention! Swan landing.

The Pont Saint Laurent in Macon.

Yes! We made it with lots of room to spare.

I guess there are more castles in the region than in the South

E Bärner verlore im Burgund! Notice how patriotic we exile-Swiss can be!

The entrance to the Seille river. According to the maps the river is in theory 1.5 m deep (the map says in reality 1.3 m), is 39 km long has four locks and ends at Louhans.
But looking at it - I don't know if I ever should venture into it!

The quays of Tournus in Burgundy

A heron enjoying the afternoon sun

Sunday April 25 7:25pm: Our mooring for the night - the commercial quay at Chalon sur Saône

Monday April 26 - the Doubs river joins the Saône. A large part of the cruise on the Rhone-Rhine canal is on the river Doubs

Burgundy countryside - swans, cows, peace and quiet

Another small Burgundy country-home

The North branch of the Doubs river entering the Saône

Hard to imagine that the river is navigable for 13 km

Saint Jean de Losne is THE center of river pleasure barges of France.
It has a big harbor, dry docks and ship-yards. The canal de Bourgogne branches towards Paris. You see a barge leaving that canal and entering the Saône below the bridge.

Since we are in the Burgundy we fly the Burgundy regional flag as our courtesy flag.

Gisela and Thomas have obviously a good time.
